Last week's match reports - Win for the weather!!

Hadleigh v Maldon match report

With the recent weather equating to a flip of a coin Maldon turned up to Hadleigh in unsettled conditions which resulted in a late start. Maldon won the toss and elected to bat. This proved to be a good decision as Chris Harris and Max Bryant put on 77 for the first wicket at a good rate. Harris being the first to go when looking set to emulate some of his fine innings from last year for 41. Bryant after two promising starts in recent weeks then went on to produce a brilliant and chanceless innings of 93 that was the backbone of the Maldon innings. He was ably supported by Ian Elliott who again looked in good form. When their partnership of 69 was broken the innings finished with Liam Saxton under clubbing whilst trying to replicate last year’s heroics and a Foster brother’s cameo taking Maldon to a very competitive 220 off 40 overs.

After a further rain delay Hadleigh started their innings struggling to deal with Matt Wild’s opening spell. After surviving unscathed Jack Riley then chipped in with the opening wicket. This breakthrough was countered by an aggressive second wicket partnership which showed Hadleigh’s intent. When Saxton broke this partnership at 65 for 2 the game looked well balanced only for the heavens to open and finally succeed in what had been threatened all day, an abandonment. The result being Maldon taking 12pts to Hadleigh’s 9 pts from the game.

Maldon’s Captain, Chris Harris said “It’s a shame the heavens opened as I fancied us to win this, once the spinners came on, scoring runs would be very difficult, but a 12 point haul isn’t bad at all”.

Maldon 4th Team Vs Chappel & Wakes Colne – 12th May 2018

All of our weather apps told us the rain was set in till 6pm. However, the Chappel players’ apps said differently. We waited until 2pm and the rain stopped! A reduced over game was agreed and Maldon started the 25 overs batting. Over the years Maldon Cricket Club has invested a lot of time in bringing younger cricket into open age games. For this game six of our eleven players were colts with two still playing U13 cricket. The rest of us were considerably older! After the 25 overs, it was the colts that showed the older generation how to survive and bat with several, on debut, scoring their first runs for the club. Joe Gregory scored 10 and Josh Robottom 11 not out. We posted a modest 75 runs and went into the field looking for quick wickets. Joe Figg and Ethan Bardo opened the bowling and despite good economy rates, wickets provided elusive. Although a plumb LBW and tough dropped catch would have scored us a bonus point! Callum Figg then bowled his first overs for the club and looked like he had been bowling at this level for years. Chappel reached the total from 15 overs. However, the overriding feeling as we sat in the pavilion with a cup of tea was the sense of pride that the colt players performed with confidence and skill and that the future looks very rosy for Maldon Cricket Club
