Desert Island Dons - Week Five
In keeping with the past few seasons, in 2019 we will run a new weekly segment on the website. This year the theme is 'Desert Island Discs' in which, for those unfamiliar with the Radio 4 show, a club member suggests the five records, luxury item, book, and personal memento they would keep with them if they found themselves stranded on a desert island.
This week's castaway is bowling legend (8-46), musical virtuoso, MCC webmaster, and 60th in line to the throne, Lord David Boyden.
Your five records and why?
1. Jackson Browne - Late For the Sky
- Could pick anything by him: the reason I started writing.
2. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Rebels
- Again, could have been anything but this is a perfect example of how effortless he made it look.
3. Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
- I'll fight anyone who says her performance of this at the Kennedy Centre Awards wasn't one of the best ever.
4. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
- Listened to this about 500 times in Berlin and still can't get my head around it.
5. Toto - Africa
- Greatest feat of known human creativity.
What would be your luxury item and why?
A 1940s Martin D-45 acoustic guitar - plenty of practice time.
What book would you take and why?
Don DeLillo's ' Underworld' - I became obsessed with DeLillo when writing my dissertation but still haven't read this tome.
Your personal memento?
I really enjoyed going through the boxes of family albums recently so I'd take them.
Next week we'll have another castaway with their selections.
